Tony Bellew for those rare few who don’t know, is a professional British boxer born and bred in Liverpool. In total he’s had 33 professional fights, with 30 wins, 1 draw and only 2 losses. Tony is incredibly proud of his city and is a huge family man.
Despite being so busy, Tony was kind enough to spare a few minute to talk to us…
What motivates you?
I’m just a local Liverpool lad who followed his heart by doing what he enjoyed and I’ve done ok I guess. At the end of the day I’m a fighter and I love fighting, so that’s what motivated me more than anything at the start. Now my priorities have shifted towards my family by providing a secure future for them.
When I lost my brother in law. That was an incredibly difficult time for me and my family.
Best day in boxing?
Is still has to be that night at Goodison against Makabu to win the WBC belt. It was the defining moment of my career. I’d dreamt of that moment I dreamed of doing this from the min I put boxing gloves on 20+ years ago! That WBC Belt and this win meant EVERYTHING!
I don’t believe in regrets, life is just too short.
Person you admire the most?
Locally, John Conteh. I idolised him as a kid. In my eyes he’s the greatest fighter this country has possibly ever produced. He is that good. He is a true role model in my city.
Where can you see yourself in 5 years time?
Who knows what the future will bring, I certainly didn’t see myself here 5 years ago. But hopefully me and my family are happy and healthy, that’s all you can ask for really isn’t it?
How do you unwind?
Quality downtime with the family, I love my family and because I’m such a busy man I appreciate them even more whenever I’m with them.
Best piece(s) of advice for others?
The world doesn’t owe you a living, you have to get out there, work hard and be patient. Success will come.
