Lawrence Kenwright, founder of Northern hospitality giant Signature Living, gave a TED Talk recently on Entrepreneurial Socialism. Lawrence is arguably Liverpool’s most popular Trailblazer in recent times, Signature Living have not only provided hundreds of jobs for local people, but also given back a great deal to the homeless of the city via his Cotton Street Project. Lawrence has also been on his own journey, making this hard-hitting talk even more notable.

What is a TedTalk?

TED is a nonprofit devoted to spreading ideas, usually in the form of short, powerful talks (18 minutes or less). TED began in 1984 as a conference where Technology, Entertainment and Design converged, and today covers almost all topics — from science to business to global issues — in more than 100 languages. Meanwhile, independently run TEDx events help share ideas in communities around the world.

What is Entrepreneurial Socialism?

Seldom do you find these two words bundled together; they are clearly aligned to the extremes of our political parties, but I believe, through my own experiences and practise, that the two can harmonise. When you look into the mechanics of both extremes, you see a vision where two opposites can actually attract.

I strongly believe that entrepreneurs and businesses need to work with socialism and be anchored with social responsibility.
