Inside the Port of Liverpool Building

Liverpool’s architecture is truly one like no other for many reasons, its three graces being one, or three. Every day without fail people stand in awe taking pictures of these giants, the oldest of the three graces is The Port of Liverpool Building.

Opened in 1907 and costing £250,000, it was the headquarters of Mersey Docks and Harbour Board for 87 years until 1994, when they moved to Maritime Centre near Seaforth Dock North of the city. Unfortunately, during the Second World War a bomb courtesy of the Luftwaffe reached its basement in 1941 exploded, causing significant damage. Fortunately, the buildings’ structural integrity remained intact and after the war it was fully restored, which ended up costing more than the initial construction.

Today this ineffable structure is home to a plethora of businesses, one of those being Howden Insurance Brokers, part of the internationally renowned Hyperion Group with a global network of over 15,000 specialists in 90 territories.

So why did Howden decide to base themselves in the Port of Liverpool building? Divisional Director Stuart Dugdill said ‘The Port of Liverpool Building accurately reflects the traditional relationship we have with our clients. We pride ourselves on having that personal connection by spending essential face-to-face time that ultimately leads to a greater understanding of the specific challenges faced by businesses. It’s a pleasure to say we’re based in the Port of Liverpool Building, which is why we’ve been here for nearly 10 years. Its magnificent hallways and arches are a constant reminder of the heritage and significance this building is to a city like Liverpool.’

Although an international operator, Howden works with businesses large and small, domestic and global to deliver all manner of insurance cover from professional indemnity to general insurance .  With $22 Billion of premium placed each year, Howden are a well-balanced outfit that has the global reach, but also the local knowledge and appreciation for its local culture to deliver what it does best.
