A Bold Move Against Thieves: Greggs Takes Action to Protect Its Stores
Greggs is taking bold steps to combat shoplifting by moving its self-serve food and drinks behind the counter in select locations. This trial initiative aims to tackle rising theft, particularly in areas experiencing high rates of anti-social behaviour. Locations like Whitechapel in East London, alongside others in Peckham and Ilford, will serve as testing grounds for this approach. Shoplifting has seen a staggering 20% increase in police-reported offenses, reaching over 516,971 incidents in 2024. However, the British Retail Consortium indicates that actual thefts are much higher, with shops facing about 20.4 million thefts in a recent year.
Greggs asserts that the safety of both staff and customers is their top priority, ensuring that a full range of products will still be available but in a more secure manner. Reports indicate that organized gangs are targeting retailers, employing tactics to create distractions, leading to even greater concerns about security. Andy Higginson, a retail leader, noted a shift in societal attitudes towards theft, suggesting an alarming view among some that steeling from stores is acceptable.
The rise in retail crime has notably surged post-Covid, with increases linked to growing living costs; however, some experts argue that the items being stolen are often not essential goods but rather high-value products. A representative from a security firm remarked on a new demographic among shoplifters, highlighting a rise in pensioners resorting to theft as they cope with rising living expenses. Instances of older individuals and even mothers stealing small items for personal use indicate a shift in the profile of shoplifters, showcasing the complexities of motivations behind retail theft today.
