Cimandis Shuts Down Operations in Channel Islands: Economic Pressures Take Toll on Local Food Supply

Food wholesaler Cimandis has announced it will cease operations in Guernsey by the end of August 2025, following the recent closure of its Jersey depot. The company, part of the Caterfood Buying Group, has cited rising shipping costs, increased rents, and the logistical challenges of island operations as reasons for this decision, which will also affect services to Alderney, Herm, and Sark.

Managing director Nigel Holliday expressed that the current economic environment made it unsustainable to maintain a viable business model. The exact number of jobs affected by this closure remains uncertain. Deputy Adrian Gabriel, President of the States Committee for the Environment & Infrastructure, expressed sympathy for employees who may lose their jobs, assuring that the Job Centre is ready to assist those in need. He acknowledged potential short-term impacts on the local food supply chain but reassured that contingency plans are in place to mitigate critical supply issues.

Cimandis had previously closed its Rue des Pres Trading Estate location in St Saviour, Jersey due to ‘increasingly challenging trading conditions,’ but had initially assured that operations in Guernsey would remain unaffected. To support customers during this transition, Cimandis committed to running stock clearance sales and collaborating with recruitment agencies to help affected employees find new roles. Customers are encouraged to reach out to their account managers with any concerns regarding product availability. In a statement, Mr. Holliday expressed gratitude for the loyalty of their customers during this challenging time.
