Light Up the Night: The Rise of Drone Shows from Weddings to Festivals

Drones are taking celebrations by storm, replacing traditional fireworks with stunning displays of light and creativity. One remarkable example is the wedding of Bobby and Siobhan Underwood, where a surprise drone show featuring 300 drones dazzled guests with intricate designs like a baseball player, reflecting Mr. Underwood’s favorite sport. This event occurred on New Year’s Eve 2024 in New York State, a growing trend where drone shows enhance special occasions such as weddings, birthdays, and major events.

Previously rare, drone shows are now commonplace, even gracing festivals like Glastonbury in 2024. The biggest drone display in history showcased 10,200 drones in China, demonstrating the technology’s potential and artistry. Sally French, a prominent figure in the drone industry, praises these shows for their artistic nature, likening them to intricate performances seen at ball games and corporate events.

However, the cost can be significant – about $300 per drone, resulting in shows that can easily reach tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars, as seen with the Underwoods’ wedding.

Skymagic, a leading drone show company, offers spectacular displays that can exceed $1 million, using around 6,000 drones designed to fly in synchronized formations. Each drone is equipped with LED lights, capable of executing precise movements controlled by a single operator on the ground, thanks to GPS technology.

While fireworks traditionally boast a ‘boom’ factor, advancements in drone technology allow them to launch pyrotechnics, providing a hybrid spectacle of light and sound. Drones also offer a better synchronization with music, enhancing the overall experience. Yet, challenges such as regulatory restrictions and the labor-intensive setup process persist, posing barriers to entry for some.

Pedro Rosário, a designer of drone performances, highlights the freedom and creativity available in crafting narratives with drone shows, which can be combined with fireworks or lasers. Overall, the rise of drone shows promises a new era of entertainment, captivating audiences and transforming how we celebrate special moments.
