Raise a Glass: Distressed Gin Firm Seeks New Owner Following Founder’s Passing

A notable gin company, Nelson’s Distillery & School Ltd, is now on the market after entering administration. Established in 2016 by former chef Neil Harrison, the distillery operates out of Uttoxeter, Staffordshire, and offers a unique experience with its fully equipped distillery and a 14-station gin school. The sale follows significant operational disruptions that arose after Harrison’s untimely death, as revealed by administrator Martin Williamson.

Despite these recent challenges, Williamson emphasizes that the company’s core offerings are still strong, supported by solid production infrastructure and exclusive gin recipes cherished by their customer base and recognized within tourism accolades. The company gained popularity with its flagship London Dry No 7 gin and Signature Blend Rum. Notably, Nelson’s has also created private-label spirits for highly regarded chefs and restaurants, including collaborations with Michele Roux and La Gavroche.

The business boasts a robust digital presence, strong brand recognition, and proven retail success, making it an attractive opportunity for prospective buyers. The sale includes valuable UK trademarks and recipes, which will be transferred to the new owner. Williamson highlighted the urgency for a sale, needing to finalize arrangements by July 31, with all expressions of interest required by 5 PM BST on July 21.
