Sky-High Changes: Ryanair Ups Free Cabin Bag Size to Match New EU Standards
Ryanair is making waves in the aviation industry by increasing the size limit for its free cabin bags by a notable 20%. This change aligns with new regulations set by the EU that aim to standardize luggage allowances for passengers flying within Europe. Starting soon, travelers on Ryanair will be allowed to carry a personal bag measuring up to 40cm x 30cm x 20cm, which is designed to fit comfortably under the seat in front of them, as long as it weighs less than 10kg.
This increase comes as a welcome update, as Ryanair’s previous maximum was 40cm x 25cm x 20cm, which didn’t meet the new EU minimum requirement of 40cm x 30cm x 15cm. Impressively, this means Ryanair’s new allowance is 33% larger than the EU standard.
While the airline did not specify the reasoning behind this more generous bag allowance, it positions Ryanair’s offering favorably compared to competitors. For example, EasyJet allows for a 45cm x 36cm x 20cm bag, which also has a weight limit of 10kg, while Wizz Air matches Ryanair’s new dimensions. British Airways offers a smaller bag allowance for personal items, yet allows an additional larger cabin bag free of charge.
In recent months, the EU has been actively collaborating with airlines to establish a clear guideline for minimum bag sizes, aimed at eliminating confusion experienced by passengers who often encounter unexpected fees for oversized luggage. Just last month, a significant change was proposed in the European parliament, where a vote granted passengers the right to carry an extra piece of hand luggage weighing up to 7kg, pending final approval.
Travelers are encouraged to verify bag regulations directly with their airlines to avoid complications during their journeys. With Ryanair’s updates, passengers may soon find flying with a cabin bag not only more spacious but also more standardized across various airlines.
