Transforming First Impressions: Midland Road's Revitalization Reopens to Traffic

Nearly a year in the making, Midland Road in Bedford is set to reopen both lanes this Wednesday, as revitalization efforts reach a key milestone. The roadwork was aimed at enhancing the gateway to the town through repaving, widening, and overall improvements, funded by a portion of the £22.6m Bedford Town Deal. Local businesses, however, have felt the impact of the long closures, with many reporting a drop in customer traffic.

Anil Luthra, owner of Bubbly’s Travel, expressed relief about the reopening but noted that the construction had deterred customers significantly, stating that many avoided passing through Midland Road altogether due to the ongoing work.

Andrea Spice, a Conservative member of the Bedford Borough Council, reiterated the council’s commitment to supporting local businesses during this transformation, acknowledging that while parking was limited, efforts were made to improve accessibility and the overall look of the area. She emphasized that the improvements included cleaner and wider pavements, aimed at enhancing the visitor experience as it serves as a main route from the train station into the town center.

The reopening marks a significant step in the Midland Road public realm improvements, promising a fresh start for the area and the businesses that line it. Samantha Laycock, chair of the Bedford Town Deal Board, hailed the reopening as just the beginning of an exciting transformation for Midland Road.
