**Travel Troubles on the Tracks: Eurostar Faces Major Disruptions**
Passengers traveling on Eurostar experienced significant delays and cancellations on Monday stemming from a power supply issue affecting a rail line in northern France. The disruptions began around 08:30 local time (06:30 GMT) and persisted throughout the day, prompting Eurostar to cancel nine services between London and Paris while most other services faced delays.
The French rail network operator, SNCF, identified the root of the problem and indicated that repair work would continue overnight. They later announced that normal service would likely resume the next day. In addition to the affected Eurostar trains, services connecting Brussels and Paris as well as Amsterdam and Paris also experienced cancellations and delays due to the high-speed rail closure between Moussy and Longueil in the Hauts-de-France region.
Notably, trains operating between London-Amsterdam, Brussels-Amsterdam, Brussels-London, and Brussels-Cologne were unaffected by this incident. SNCF described the service disruptions as severely impacting operations and noted that the power supply issue necessitated major repairs, leading to anticipated delays of between one and five hours across Eurostar and other services like TGV inOui and Ouigo.
Late in the evening, SNCF reported that the affected track had reopened on a single track in both directions. However, assurances of a prompt return to normalcy were tempered with the expectation that full service would still take time and was unlikely to stabilize until the end of the day. As August marks a peak travel period due to school holidays, the timing of these disruptions heightened the impact on travelers. This incident follows a prior evacuation of a Eurostar train nearly a month ago and recent major interruptions related to separate incidents of cable theft and fatal accidents on the LGV Nord line, underscoring ongoing challenges faced by the rail system.
