Unleashing the Power of K-Pop: How 'KPop Demon Hunters' Became Netflix’s All-Time Hit
KPop Demon Hunters has skyrocketed to become Netflix’s most viewed movie ever, achieving over 236 million views since its debut in June. This animated musical phenomenon has expertly combined elements of K-pop and fantasy, captivating audiences worldwide and surpassing the prior record held by the action-comedy Red Notice.
The story features a fictional K-pop girl band, Huntr/x, who use their music and combat skills to defend humanity from demons. Despite a modest launch at Netflix’s Tudum theatre in Los Angeles, the film gained traction through word-of-mouth, viral social media content, and catchy K-pop songs that have become hugely popular on platforms like Spotify. Notable tracks include Golden, which recently hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100, establishing Huntr/x as a formidable name in both the fictional and real K-pop realms.
Co-director Maggie Kang emphasized the film’s ambition to resonate with K-pop fans, employing seasoned producers with experience in crafting hits for renowned groups like BTS and Twice.
To capitalize on its growing popularity, Netflix recently released a sing-along version in select cinemas, marking its first number one film at the US box office. Additionally, the film’s soundtrack has achieved remarkable milestones, including topping the Spotify global charts and featuring four simultaneous hits on the Billboard Hot 100, outperforming iconic K-pop acts, BTS and Blackpink. Talks of a potential sequel are already in the pipeline, indicating that the KPop Demon Hunters phenomenon could continue to thrive.
