A Bold Stand: Labour MP Resigns Over Controversial Disability Benefit Cuts
Labour MP Vicky Foxcroft has made headlines by resigning from her position as a whip in protest over the government’s proposed cuts to disability benefits. In her resignation letter to the Prime Minister, Foxcroft voiced her frustrations, acknowledging the need for addressing the growing welfare bill but insisting that reducing personal independence payments (PIPs) and changes to universal credit should not be part of the solution. She struggled with her decision, noting, “Sadly it now seems that we are not going to get the changes I desperately wanted to see.”
In response, a government spokesperson defended the cuts as part of reforms aimed at fixing a broken welfare system, asserting that the changes would ensure support for those in need while encouraging others to find work. This follows the introduction of a bill that tightens eligibility requirements for PIPs and reduces the sickness-related element in universal credit.
The proposed measures have raised alarms among over 100 Labour MPs, who are concerned about potential backlash during the upcoming vote. Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy downplayed fears of a rebellion, indicating Foxcroft was the only frontbencher to express intentions to resign. Nandy, however, recognized dubious sentiments among backbench MPs.
Former shadow disabilities minister Dame Emily Thornberry lauded Foxcroft’s expertise and emphasized the need for careful consideration regarding the vote. Work and Pensions Secretary Liz Kendall reassured her colleagues that she is available for those distressed by the bill while reinforcing government commitment to reforming welfare for better support and employment opportunities
The cuts could affect 370,000 existing PIP claimants, potentially driving 250,000 people into poverty, while the government expects to save £5 billion annually by 2030. Amidst these developments, Foxcroft stated she could not support reforms that diminish support for disabled individuals and expressed pride in her contributions during Labour’s tenure.
Concerns about party governance and pressure from leadership towards Labour MPs have further intensified discussions within the party. Many have expressed solidarity with Foxcroft, commending her for prioritizing her principles over party politics.
