A Legacy in Financial Turmoil: The Untold Story of Alex Salmond's Debt and Legal Battles
Former Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond left behind a complex estate burdened by over £340,000 in debts and merely £2,000 in assets at the time of his death, as revealed by Begbies Traynor, the accountants appointed to manage his winding up. The announcement follows the appointment of Kenny Craig as the trustee in sequestration, a role intended to oversee the bankruptcy process in Scotland due to the financial strain from legal actions taken against the Scottish government during Salmond’s later years.
In 2019, Salmond successfully won a judicial review against the Scottish government over its management of harassment complaints filed by civil servants. This ruling deemed the government’s handling as ”tainted with apparent bias,” leading to the government compensating Salmond £512,000 for his legal fees. Despite being acquitted of several sexual misconduct charges at a subsequent criminal trial, the financial aftermath of those legal battles left his estate in dire straits.
As his estate undergoes sequestration, investigations will also explore the potential value of ongoing legal actions where Salmond sought damages against the government he had previously led. Notably, Craig from Begbies Traynor noted the case as ”unusual and complex,” acknowledging the sensitivity required given the high-profile nature of the former leader’s circumstances.
Salmond passed away from a heart attack while attending a gathering in North Macedonia, marking a poignant end to a contentious legacy filled with both political prowess and financial strife.
