As Tensions Rise, UK and Germany Ramp Up Undersea Surveillance: 'We're Hunting Your Subs, Putin!'
Defence Secretary John Healey has issued a clear warning to Russian President Vladimir Putin, declaring: ”We’re hunting your submarines.” This statement comes amid a 30% increase in Russian naval activity threatening UK waters, signaling a surge in Russian aggression that is now impacting all of Europe, not just Ukraine. The UK’s Ministry of Defence reports that Russian submarine presence in the North Atlantic mirrors levels not seen since the Cold War.
In response to this threat, the Royal Air Force (RAF) and Royal Navy are intensifying their monitoring of the North Atlantic, with RAF missions flying almost daily, often in coordination with NATO allies. Notably, BBC News accompanied Healey on a P-8 reconnaissance flight, where they observed crews managing sophisticated surveillance equipment designed to track both surface and underwater activities. The P-8, resembling a Boeing 737 yet equipped with advanced technology like cameras, sensors, and listening devices, is employed to ensure Russian vessels remain under constant scrutiny.
Healey stresses that the UK’s defensive capacity signifies to Putin that ”we’re watching you; we’re hunting your subs.” The mission included tracking surface vessels and deploying sonar buoys to detect submerged threats. The RAF’s ongoing efforts include monitoring Russian spy ships like the Yantar, which posed risks to critical undersea communications infrastructure. Moreover, during operations alongside American and Norwegian aircraft, RAF personnel successfully tracked a Russian submarine trailing the USS Gerald R Ford.
The collaboration between the UK and Germany is emerging stronger, with German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius joining Healey. As Germany acquires additional P-8 aircraft and commits to joint operations, the two nations aim to bolster surveillance in the North Atlantic and further enhance cooperation in military capabilities, including new cyber-security initiatives.
Pistorius emphasizes the crucial nature of the North Atlantic, declaring the need for vigilance against Russian threats to undersea infrastructure. Both ministers highlight the necessity to address the myriad forms of hybrid warfare Russia currently employs, which now extend beyond military engagements to disinformation campaigns and cyber threats. They affirm that it is essential for Europe to remain aware and proactive in safeguarding its interests in light of these challenges.
