From Serving Justice to Serving Luxury: The Controversial Rise of a Reform Councillor
Andrew Hamilton-Gray, the newly elected councillor for Loughborough representing Reform, has stirred controversy after revelations about his past as a police officer. Having garnered nearly 40% of the vote, Hamilton-Gray’s history with Leicestershire Police casts a shadow over his political career, as details emerged of his dismissal from the force for misconduct.
In January 2024, a panel found him guilty of multiple breaches of professional standards, primarily for using sick leave to pursue his side business in the luxury car market. Specifically, he falsely reported himself as sick to travel to Spain to deliver a car while officially supposed to be working. This deceptive behavior was characterized by former Chief Constable Rob Nixon as a ”deliberate” and “planned” deception, fundamentally undermining the trust and integrity expected of police officers.
For context, the inquiry revealed that Hamilton-Gray was already running a consultancy aimed at high-end car dealerships while he was still serving as a police constable. He was also noted to have had permission to operate this side business during his personal time. However, during a leave request, he attempted to deliver a vintage Porsche to a client in Barcelona but was denied the time off he sought, prompting him to misuse his sick leave.
Adding to the intrigue, he was later spotted in this vintage Porsche while cleverly avoiding any accountability for his absences due to illness. Post-dismissal, Hamilton-Gray has been put on the College of Policing barred list, bringing his credibility as a public servant into question. Despite these serious allegations, he has expressed commitment to serving Loughborough with ”honour, integrity and transparency” on social media following his election.
Hamilton-Gray is also involved in the local business scene as the registered director of two companies, further complicating his public image as a councillor. Due to the sensitive nature of his dismissal and current standing, he has reportedly been advised against providing additional comments.
