From Trolls to Triumph: MP Reveals Weight Loss Journey with Mounjaro and Safety Concerns
Carolyn Harris, a Labour MP for Neath and Swansea East, has achieved a staggering 10 stone weight loss after starting the weight loss medication Mounjaro in October 2024. She candidly shares her motivations, which include physical difficulties and the relentless criticism she faced online regarding her appearance. After developing mobility issues, especially notable during a celebratory walk for International Menopause Day, Harris sought private medical treatment, emphasizing the importance of undergoing proper health assessments before taking such medications.
At 65 years old, Harris expressed frustration over how her appearance eclipsed her political identity, stating, “How I looked or what I was wearing had become more important than my politics.” Despite her transformation, she warns others against using unregulated sources for weight-loss injections, calling it “playing Russian roulette with their lives.”
Concerns over the rise in demand for weight-loss drugs like Mounjaro and Ozempic are echoed by the National Pharmacy Association. In England, medical professionals prescribing these injections must be registered, but in Wales, the regulations are deemed inadequate, allowing greater risk for unlicensed and unsafe practices. Harris vocalizes her fears about a black market in these medications, urging people to acquire prescriptions only from registered healthcare professionals to ensure safety. The Welsh government reaffirms that prescription-only medicines should only be procured through reputable suppliers, highlighting the dangers associated with unregulated sources.
