Political Shockwave: Councillor's Defection Shakes Buckinghamshire Council
In a dramatic turn of events, Kathy Gibbon, a former Reform UK councillor, has defected to the Conservative Party, leading to calls for her resignation and a potential by-election. Gibbon, who represents the Kingsbrook, Bierton and Wing ward on Buckinghamshire Council, was elected last year under the Reform banner. Her recent switch to the Tories has sparked outrage from the Labour Party, which claims she is betraying the voters who elected her.
Gibbon’s defection results in the Conservatives regaining overall control of the council, marking a pivotal shift in local governance. The council landscape has changed significantly since the Conservatives lost 29 seats and their majority last May, making this newfound control particularly controversial. Gibbon defended her decision, stating that joining the Tories allows her to work more effectively as part of a ‘strong, experienced team.’ However, her former colleague, Cameron Anderson, criticized the move as one that would leave voters feeling a sense of dissatisfaction.
Labour’s chairman, Eris Robertson, also condemned Gibbon’s switch, calling it a “slap in the face” for constituents, and advocates for a by-election to allow voters a say in their representation. He argues that if Gibbon believes her decision aligns with local sentiments, she should honor the democratic process by seeking a fresh mandate.
The council is now divided among four political groups: the Conservative Group with 49 councillors, Liberal Democrats with 27, an Impact Alliance (comprising Labour, Independents, and Greens) with 19, and the Reform UK Group with 2 representatives. The unfolding drama not only impacts local governance but reflects broader political dynamics as different parties vie for influence within Buckinghamshire.
