Reform UK's New Leader: A Bright Future Ahead Amid Departures
In a recent address, Cllr Paul Ashton, the newly appointed leader of Reform UK in Cornwall, addressed concerns that the party was facing a crisis following the departure of five members. He emphasized that the situation is merely a temporary blip rather than an ongoing issue. After taking over leadership on October 21, Ashton’s party experienced a shakeup, which he described as a necessary reset that includes a fresh vision and strategy.

Despite losing five councillors, which reduced the party’s strength to 23, Ashton expressed optimism about the party’s chances moving forward. The Liberal Democrats, currently the largest party on Cornwall Council, hold 26 seats, placing Reform as the principal opposition. Ashton called for the party to move past the recent disturbances, stating, “We’ve learned a lot from it – we’re a new party… We’d rather it didn’t happen, but I don’t think in terms of long-term damage, that is the case.” He articulated a commitment to progress and the need to respond positively to the demands of the electorate, reinforcing that internal challenges are not uncommon in the political landscape. Ashton is keen on fostering a renewed sense of unity and purpose within the party as it navigates through these changes.
