Scottish Government Asserts Support for Sanctions as US Seizes Russian Tanker

In a significant move in the ongoing geopolitical tensions, First Minister John Swinney has publicly supported actions against Russia following the US seizure of a Russian-flagged tanker, the Marinera, in the North Atlantic. This vessel has been linked to Vladimir Putin’s shadow fleet, allegedly engaged in sanctions busting involving Iranian oil. During the operation, military aircraft utilized Benbecula Airport and Wick John O’Groats Airport, with support from the British military.

Swinney, while not privy to the operation’s specifics, emphasized the importance of enforcing sanctions against Russia for its invasion of Ukraine, stating, “If this is a measure to enforce agreed sanctions that were being circumvented, then I support that action.” His remarks underscore Scotland’s commitment to collaborative international efforts in maintaining sanctions against Russia.

The White House claimed the Marinera was attempting to evade the US Coast Guard prior to its interception, and its seizure was backed by an American court. Meanwhile, the UK Ministry of Defence confirmed that the operation was compliant with international law. The cooperation included at least three US Air Force planes landing at the Scottish airports.

Swinney expressed a desire for better communication regarding such military operations, highlighting the necessity for local awareness of issues that could impact Scotland. Scottish Secretary Douglas Alexander labeled the Marinera a stateless vessel, and emphasized the importance of combating the financing of conflicts fueled by Russian and Iranian interests.

The operation has drawn criticism from the Scottish Greens, who suggested American actions resemble acts of piracy, asserting skepticism about the US’s intentions. Labour MP Torcuil Crichton echoed these sentiments, questioning the motivations behind the seizure while acknowledging the broader context of illegal tanker operations fueling international conflicts.

Though the Scottish government had no forewarning about the military activity, they expressed support for actions that seek to uphold international sanctions. The Defence Secretary John Healy reiterated the crucial role of shadow fleets in supporting Putin’s military endeavors, bolstering the sense that actions taken may not only confront current issues but also lay groundwork for more extensive sanctions against these illicit vessels.
