Urgent Cuts Ahead: North Northamptonshire Council's £32 Million Challenge

North Northamptonshire Council is facing a daunting challenge as it seeks to find £32 million in savings to address a significant funding gap in its upcoming budget. This fiscal struggle stems from rising costs in children’s and adult services that have placed immense pressure on the council’s finances. Currently, this year’s budget of £405 million is projected to overspend by approximately £9 million, primarily driven by escalating demands in social care and children’s services.

The local authority, led by Reform UK, expresses concern over the uncertainty of government funding beyond the fiscal year 2026/27, with potential reforms anticipated later this year. Projections reveal that budget deficits could surge to £53 million by 2027/28 and reach £73 million by 2028/29 unless immediate actions are taken.

With the 2026/27 budget not set until February next year, discussions among senior officers and councillors are already in progress to devise a strategy for a balanced financial plan. Finance Director Claire Edwards indicated that measures are underway to tackle the deficits through a combination of efficiencies, income generation, and transformation projects.

In preparation for the upcoming budget, directors and budget managers will be tasked with a thorough review of spending, zeroing in on crucial areas like adult social care, home-to-school transport, and children’s services. It is imperative for the council to establish a balanced budget and set council tax rates by February 2026.
