Outrage in Local Politics: Councillor's Shocking Social Media Posts Spark Calls for Resignation
A Reform UK councillor, Peter Mason, has ignited controversy with his offensive social media posts regarding black women and the police. The posts, which surfaced through the Reform Party UK Exposed account on X, date back to early 2024 and have been widely condemned by his colleagues. Mason, who represents Burton South on the Staffordshire County Council and serves as cabinet member for strategic highways, was urged to resign by Conservative members who labeled his statements as ‘disgusting’.
In response to the backlash, Mason has since deleted his X account, offering an explanation rooted in his personal struggles at the time of the posts. He expressed regret for his “choice of words” and emphasized that he was not affiliated with any political party during the period when these comments were made. In a particularly inflammatory tweet from March 2024, he remarked: “What a surprise a statue of a fat arsed black woman,” and another from April 2024 proclaimed: “Utter rubbish the police now are a bunch of politically indoctrinated British hating scum.” He also disparaged police actions, claiming they “take the knee to BLM, paint rainbows and dance around like fairies.”
Philip White, the Conservative group leader on the council, categorically denounced Mason’s remarks as “completely unacceptable” and stated that they illustrate his true sentiments towards the residents he serves. He has called for Mason to resign or for the Reform UK party to remove him from his cabinet position if he refuses to step down. In defense of his actions, Mason denied being racist or homophobic, indicating that his time in Reform UK helped him overcome a previous negative mindset.
The scandal has raised concerns about council representation and the impact of personal views on political responsibilities, as Mason has been entrusted to make critical decisions affecting the entire county.
